What to do after getting engaged

Did you get some new bling recently? 💍 If you did and are currently in the bliss of your new “fiancĂ©” status, I know it is so tempting to launch right into wedding planning! And, I am sure social media is telling you that you need to launch into wedding planning ASAP. 😰 But, from one engaged person to another, I’ve got some great advice on what you should do now that you are engaged.

Do these three things first!

Enjoy this time & celebrate!

I know it is so tempting to launch right into wedding planning, it’s finally your time! But, the best advice I could give to you during this exciting time in your life – is to ENJOY IT. Spend the next few weeks or so celebrating this milestone! Tell your families & friends, and begin dreaming (not planning) what you envision for your wedding day and marriage. When I first got engaged my fiancĂ© and I were on vacation and kept it a secret during our time away, we didn’t tell our friends or announce it on social media, and it was the BEST decision we made! We had a couple days to simply bask in the joy & excitement of our engagement and tell the world AFTER we had our time alone together to celebrate. It was truly special!

Start lurking

Okay this might sound weird, but yes really
start creeping! Start searching for vendors, give them a follow and LURK. Watch their Instagram stories, read their Instagram posts and check out every page on their website. Do you feel like you have a personal connection with them? Do you like their work? Keep a list of who you favorite vendors are. That way, once you decide on a venue and have a wedding date, you know exactly who you want to reach out to when it is time to book your vendors!

Think about your engagement photos

When the time comes to book your wedding photographer, (I recommend soon after you book your venue & set your budget) the first step after booking your photographer will be to schedule your engagement photos! So you will need to start thinking about which season you would like to take your engagement photos in. Most photographers like to book engagement sessions months in advance (there is a lot of prep that we have to teach you & likely permit and reservations we have to secure) so it’s best to already have in mind which season you would like your session to place in! The sooner you know when you would like your engagement session, the sooner your photographer can get you on their calendar!

When you are ready to begin planning your next steps are to:

  • Research venues & start planning your budget
  • Book your venue & set your wedding date
  • Start inquiring with your main vendors: Planner, Photographer, Videographer, Florist & Caterer
